Why this exists
I'm a hobbyist maker who learned FreeCAD the hard way — bouncing off tutorials, rage-quitting the constraint solver, giving up on parts I could picture but couldn't build.
So I'm building CADWiz: a smart CAD buddy that sits beside FreeCAD, understands plain English, and coaches you through real design instead of doing it in a black box.

How it works

You install two free things
FreeCAD is a free, open-source 3D modelling program — it's what actually builds and stores your part. CADWiz is an add-on that sits inside it. Both are free, both run on your own computer.

You describe what you want
Plain sentences, the way you'd say it to someone at the bench. make a bracket 40 mm wide with two M4 holes

It shows you the steps before it runs them
Yes — there's an AI model doing the translation from your sentence into real modelling operations. Here's exactly what that means: it proposes a list of steps, you read them, and nothing touches your model until you approve. It can't reach your files on its own, and your designs are never sent anywhere to train anything.

You end up with a real model, and you know how it was made
Not a mesh you can't edit. A proper model with sketches, pads and holes you can open in plain FreeCAD tomorrow and change by hand.
You're in control
- Your files stay on your machine. CADWiz runs alongside your FreeCAD, on your computer. Your models aren't uploaded anywhere.
- You approve every operation. Nothing changes your model until you've seen what it's about to do and said yes.
- Your designs are never used to train anything. Not now, not later, not as a buried settings toggle.
- It works with FreeCAD, it doesn't replace it. Quit CADWiz tomorrow and everything you learned and everything you built is still yours, in plain FreeCAD.
- It tells you what it's bad at. The list is right here, written before you had to find out the hard way.
What it's bad at
Written down on purpose, so you can decide before you spend an evening on it.
- Curved and organic shapes. Brackets, plates, boxes and holes: fine. A sculpted handle or a faired duct: no.
- Big assemblies. It works on one part at a time. Several parts that have to fit together is beyond it today.
- Long instructions in one breath. Six changes in one sentence and it will drift. Two at a time works far better.
- Knowing whether your part is strong enough. It has no idea what load your bracket will see. That judgement is still yours.
- Being right every time. It gets things wrong, and you'll undo some of its work. Undo is always there, which is why you approve each step.
Tell me what to build
What's the part you gave up on? Or the STL you downloaded that was almost right, if only one hole had been 2 mm bigger?
That question is what shapes the backlog. I read every answer, and the specific, annoying, real ones are worth more to me than any feature list I'd come up with on my own.
